The Water Shop Naivasha

Safe drinking water at affordable price

The Water Shop Naivasha

Description of the enterprise

The Watershop Naivasha Ltd is a social enterprise which extracts, purifies and distributes drinking water (both in bottles and through refills) branded "Purefresh". The Company extracts the water from a borehole, treats it in a RO plant and sells the purified water through a network of 4 shops, serving about 2,000 households every week. The pricing is much lower than the market standards so that the "Purefresh" water can be afforded also by low-income households.

The problem/ The opportunity

It's estimated that in Kenya around 17 million individuals (43% of the total population) cannot access safe drinking water. More specifically, in the town of Naivasha - agricultural town, in the beautiful Rift Valley - the main problem is the very high level of fluoride, which can cause very serious deseases such as the skeletal fluorosis or the dental fluorosis.

The solution proposed by the enterprise

The Water Shop extracts the water from a borehole, treats it in a RO plant and sells the purified water through a network of 4 shops, serving about 2,000 households every week. Purefresh water can be bought in two different ways: i) in sealed bottles and jerrycans (with sizes ranging from 500ml to 20lt); ii) as refills. In both cases, the pricing is much lower than market standards so that the "Purefresh" water can be afforded also by low-income households. Now the Company is about to test the possibility to scale up by building a network of vending machines, to be located in existing small shops. Such innovation would allow to improve significantly the efficiency hence to gradually expand the distribution of Purefresh water, reaching the neighboring town of Nakuru.
