Boond

Solar Energy for non-electrified villages in rural India

Boond

Description of the enterprise

Boond distributes and installs small solar light systems in rural areas which are not served by the electricity grid. The Company currently operates in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh (among the poorest States in northern India).

The problem/ The opportunity

Almost half the population of India has restricted access to electricity (<8 hours per day) or is entirely lacking it. Huge problems in terms of production and distribution make the situation more serious as we move into rural areas. Today, people living in non-electrified villages are mostly forced to use kerosene lamps - expensive and highly polluting - which create great risks to health.

The solution proposed by the enterprise

Boond distributes and installs small solar light systems through a network of local agents. The company offers affordable, technologically appropriate products to its customers, which are also receiving after-sales support. Boond also facilitates the access of low-income people to its offering by establishing partnerships with local financial institutions, which disburse dedicated micro-loans.
