Description of the enterprise
AFRIpads is headquartered in Kampala and the production site is located in Masaka, rural province in Southern Uganda. The objective of the enterprise is to provide an effective and affordable solution to the thousands of girls and women who cannot access proper menstrual hygiene products. The choice to locate the production in a rural area allows AFRIpads to offer qualified, stable employment to more than 150 employees - 90% of which are women - representing a powerful development factor for the whole local community.
The problem/ The opportunity
In several developing and emerging countries menstrual hygiene management is a very relevant issue for low-income girls and women. Disposable pads are generally not available in remote areas, given their price is not affordable for the vast majority of the rural population. Unable to afford or access proper menstrual products, many girls and women rely on improvised materials like scraps of old clothing, pieces of foam mattress, toilet paper, leaves, and banana fibres to manage their menstruation – all of which are unhygienic, ineffective, and uncomfortable.
The solution proposed by the enterprise
AFRIpads designed an effective line of rewashable (hence re-usable) pads. AFRIpads Menstrual Kits are made from high-performance textiles, deliver a performance in line with disposable pads, yet can provide protection for 12+ months: a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution. With over 750,000 AFRIpads Menstrual Kits sold and counting, AFRIpads has demonstrated how a simple product innovation is helping women and girls live more hygienic, comfortable and productive lives.
